On Saturday, the United States and its European allies expressed caution about developments in Russia.
As part of the hastily launched consultations, US President Joe Biden spoke by phone about the situation in Russia with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, according to the White House.
The four leaders affirmed their “unwavering support for Ukraine”, but refrained from commenting directly on the armed rebellion of the leader of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who on Saturday ended the advance of his forces towards Moscow under an agreement he concluded with the Kremlin to turn the page on the most serious security crisis in Russia in decades.
A White House spokesman said President Biden was briefed on “the latest developments” in Russia during a Saturday morning meeting with his political and military leadership.
Similar meetings were held at the highest level in European capitals. Earlier, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken made contacts with his counterparts from the G7 countries who intend to maintain “close coordination,” according to the US State Department.
Likewise, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made similar contacts with his Canadian, French, German, British and Polish counterparts, according to his spokesman.
In a sign that the United States is taking this crisis seriously, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley canceled a planned trip to Israel and Jordan.
Amid these developments, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army, Valery Zaluzhny, confirmed to the US Chief of Staff on Saturday that the Ukrainian counter-offensive is “proceeding according to plans,” according to a statement.
