The commander of the Russian Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, confirmed on Friday that Russian forces are retreating in eastern and southern Ukraine following the Kiev counterattack.
These statements contradict recent assertions by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Ukraine is suffering "catastrophic" losses.
"On the ground... the Russian army is now retreating on the Zaporizhia and Kherson fronts.
Ukrainian forces are pushing the Russian army back," Prigozhin said on social media.
Kremlin announced last year that it had annexed the regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson, which are located in southern Ukraine, despite not completely controlling them, and Ukraine has made limited gains there recently.
