Iraqi women judges affirm the support of the Judicial Council for their role in combating corruption

    The Iraqi Women Judges Association, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program and the Human Rights Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, organized a round table entitled "The contribution of Iraqi women judges and members of the public prosecution in the center and the region in accountability for corruption through the judicial justice system." 

    Iraqi women judges affirmed the Supreme Judicial Council's support for their role in combating corruption, while pointing out that there is significant judicial cooperation between the central and regional governments, in the field of extraditing suspects and facilitating judicial matters. 

    In this regard, the first judge of the Kadhimiya Misdemeanor Court, Judge Sima Ayman, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the workshop, which was held in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program and the Human Rights Office of the United Nations Mission, deals with many issues, the most important of which is combating corruption and the role of Iraqi women judges and the prosecution." public in the Kurdistan region," noting that "there is great cooperation between the Supreme Judicial Council and the region, and this is evidenced by the participation of many female judges and the deputy public prosecutor in the Kurdistan region in the round table to combat corruption.".

    She stressed "the importance of the Iraqi judge's role in combating corruption, through her assumption of the judiciary and public prosecutor's positions," explaining that "the workshop sheds light on many issues, the most important of which are the challenges and obstacles facing the Iraqi judge and the deputy public prosecutor in applying the law and combating rampant corruption crimes and how to address them.".

    She pointed out, "There is constant support from the Supreme Judicial Council, represented by the head of the Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zaidan, in giving the judge positions and giving her confidence in applying the law properly, as is the case with her fellow judges.".

    In her turn, the Deputy Prosecutor of the Court of Integrity Investigation in Basra, Judge Alia Ali Nasser, explained to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "among the activities of the Iraqi Women Judges Association is holding this workshop to support and strengthen the role of the Iraqi judge in judicial work in general and in anti-corruption courts." In particular, a number of female judges from the governorates of Iraq, as well as from the Kurdistan region, participate in this workshop.

    In addition to that, she indicated that "the workshop aims to exchange experiences between female judges in the region and female judges in the rest of the governorates, as well as to strengthen the role of women judges in the anti-corruption courts in Iraq.".

    For her part, a member of the Public Prosecution in the Court of First Instance in Erbil, and in the Kurdistan Region Screening Committee, Judge Eham Yunis Salih, confirmed that "the judiciary works sincerely and seriously, and so is the case for the members of the Public Prosecution, and they are very cooperative in fighting corruption.".

    She pointed out, "There is great cooperation with the Judicial Council in Baghdad, especially in handing over the accused, whether they are in the Kurdistan region or the rest of the provinces, as well as facilitating notifications and everything that speeds up the judicial work process."
