The representative of the Prime Minister Bassem Al-Awadi said on Wednesday that the Iraqi government has taken a great deal of space to ensure and create a journalistic atmosphere, while stressing the need for the press to help the government to uncover corruption files.

Al-Awadi said in a speech delivered on behalf of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani during the celebration of World Press Freedom Day and attended by the reporter of the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the press represents the power that has no limits, as we are proud that Iraq is one of the countries that knew the press early and before many countries," noting that "the Iraqi press extends its life to more than a century and a half and was the witness to the basic transformations that made modern Iraq in all its details."

"After the years of dictatorship, in which the doors were closed to free media and different opinions, the press and journalists returned to contribute to building the new Iraq destroyed by dictatorship," he said, noting that "one of the most important classifications achieved during the post-dictatorship years is freedom of the press guaranteed by the constitution and laws."

He stressed that "the government, through its curriculum and program, has taken a great deal of space to ensure and create a journalistic atmosphere in front of the world of journalism and journalists, believing in the freedom of the press and its impact on building the nation," pointing out that "we expect the press to convey the true picture of the services and programs provided by the government to do justice to our people, especially related to the fight against poverty, as well as government programs that work to restore the spirit of industry, agriculture and economy in Iraq."

He stressed the need for "the press to help the government uncover corruption files that caused the waste of Iraqis' money," pointing to "the importance of the press being a springboard for establishing national unity and fighting extremist ideas".

Al-Awadi congratulated "all the journalist family on this occasion."
