Environment Minister Nizar Aamidi stressed Friday, that the government program attaches great importance to addressing climate change, while stressing the importance of activating international support in facing the challenges of climate change.
A statement by the ministry received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) said that "as part of its participation in the annual meetings of the World Bank held in Washington from April 11 to 14, the Minister of Environment, Engineer Nizar Aamidi, participated in the work of the high-level dialogue session hosted by the World Bank in Washington, D.C., In the presence of the bank’s employees and experts, and the participation of the concerned ministers of Jordan, Morocco and Egypt,” pointing out that “the session was entitled Accelerating Climate-Smart Development, during which the conditions of these countries and the challenges they face and possible areas of cooperation with the World Bank were reviewed.”
The statement added that "the Minister of Environment presented within this context the programs of the Iraqi government and the serious steps it has taken to face the repercussions of climate change, which has become a threat to the whole world and not only Iraq, and this file is of great importance in the government program," stressing at the same time "the importance of activating international support in mitigation and adaptation programs and projects to address climate changes.”
"The World Bank presented the Climate and Development Report in Iraq to be the basis for an analysis to meet the most urgent development needs and climate challenges simultaneously, and to take actions and remedies to overcome the dangers of climate change and accelerate green, flexible and inclusive development in Iraq to help the gradual transformation of the sustainable green economy," Aamidi said.
The statement added that "the importance of the development of joint cooperation and action programs in all fields, especially the file of climate change, and addressing its political, economic, social and even security effects and dimensions were also addressed," calling for "transforming the programs and projects presented in the World Bank report into projects that serve the environmental sector, especially with regard to waste recycling, the water sector. agriculture, improving water management efficiency and sustainable renewable energies.
