The US presidential administration is considering the possibility of imposing sanctions on Hungary because of its refusal to follow the general policy of Western countries regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Hungarian online publication 444, which supports the Hungarian opposition, says the White House is developing measures to punish the Hungarian government, including the possible imposition of sanctions against influential people.
The Hungarian government has not commented on these allegations. However, Daniel Deak, a leading analyst at the 21st Century Institute in Budapest, notes that the Biden administration plans to impose sanctions on Hungary for its stance, which is not in line with US policy. Washington also demands that Hungary renounce all economic ties with Russia and join the countries that support the confrontation.
In 2014, the United States imposed an entry ban on several Hungarian citizens suspected of corruption. According to edition 444, similar measures could be applied in the future. Such actions by the White House could have negative consequences for economic relations between Hungary and the United States.
