The Ministry of Water Resources announced that Iraq had joined the Helsinki Convention for the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses.
"Iraq deposited the instrument of accession to the Convention for the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes; known as the United Nations Water Convention; on the sidelines of the Water Conference in New York, according to the statement statement by the Ministry of Water Resources, received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
The statement included, "The agreement aims to ensure the sustainable use of transboundary water resources by facilitating cooperation and improving the management of water resources at the national level," noting that "Iraq is the first country in the Middle East to join this agreement and the forty-ninth member of this international legal, unique, intergovernmental framework."
