The Ministry of Oil confirmed on Monday, that the visit of OPEC Secretary-General Haitham Al-Ghais to Baghdad represents the organization's interest in Iraq and its role in the oil market.
The ministry's spokesman, Assem Jihad, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "OPEC Secretary-General Haitham Al-Ghais was keen to visit Iraq due to its importance in the oil arena for OPEC, which was established in Baghdad, just as Iraq is the country second in terms of production in the organization.
Jihad added, "The Secretary-General of OPEC met the Minister of Oil and officials in the Iraqi government, in addition to his visit to the People's Hall, which witnessed the first founding meeting of the organization in the presence of 5 countries in 1960."
He pointed out that "the visit represents the organization's interest in Iraq and the role it plays in the oil market," pointing out that "Iraq's cooperation with the organization has led to the stability of the oil market and facing the challenges facing producers in this sector."
He stressed that "the organization faced economic, political, security and health challenges earlier, which affected the oil markets, and were confronted by the producing countries in OPEC Plus."
It is noteworthy that the Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries "OPEC" Haitham Al-Ghais arrived, yesterday, Sunday, in Baghdad, on an official visit that lasts for two days.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Oil, Assem Jihad, said in a statement, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, Haitham Al-Ghais, arrived in Baghdad, on a two-day visit, at the invitation of the Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Hayyan Abdul Ghani."
He pointed out, "The schedule of the Secretary's visit to OPEC includes meeting with a number of officials in Baghdad."
