Awareness spread on social media, today, Friday, the death of large numbers of fish and other marine creatures on the shores of Fort Myers, in the US state of Florida.
The incident was monitored after the health authorities in the state warned of the possibility of a "red tide", which is a natural environmental phenomenon that occurs due to the harmful bloom of one or more types of plankton or phytoalgae in the waters of seas or lakes, which causes a clear change in the color of the water.
"The number of dead fish has increased due to tidal waves and the recurring toxic algal bloom (red tides)," Fort Myers spokeswoman Jennifer Dexter said in a statement.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, the algae produce toxins that can kill fish and many marine animals, and can be harmful to humans and cause respiratory problems.
