The Ministry of Foreign Affairs-MOFA confirmed on Tuesday that no diplomatic passports were granted outside legal controls.
MOFA stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency that "The Special Committee for the Audit of Diplomatic Passport Applications, formed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein headed by Ambassador Safiya Talib Al-Suhail and members of Ambassador Omar Al-Barzanjee and Ambassador Abdel Rahman Al-Husseini held a meeting with the head of Iraqi Parliamentarians Union Montaser Al-Emara and its accompanying delegation ".
The statement added, “The meeting which was attended by the Head of the Legal Service, Ambassador Haider Al-Barraak, Head of the Consular Department, Ahmed Amin, Head of the Protocol department, discussed benefiting from the capabilities and competencies in the ministries of the Iraqi state, especially former MPs, and benefiting from their experiences in the areas of developing the work.”
He continued, "The two sides touched on the issue of granting diplomatic passports to former MPs, especially after what was circulated by some media outlets, and the need for a joint role in showing the true picture of the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," stressing that " no diplomatic passport was granted outside legal controls.”
For his part, Montaser Al-Emara indicated that "the law guarantees that the retired MP have the right to obtain a diplomatic passport even after his retirement, and this is within the Parliament Law No. 13 of 2018, and as a result of this law a decision was issued by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers to grant diplomatic passports to former deputies, and MOFA will be provided with the requests of the MPs to obtain the passport.”
