Directorate for Mine Action(DMA), in the Ministry of Environment counted on Thursday, the contaminated and Secured areas in Iraq, while revealing joint projects that make a qualitative leap in tackling pollution.
The Director General of DMA, Dhafir Mahmood Khallaf,, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the contaminated area in Nineveh province is more than 30 square kilometers, while the Secured areas amounted to more than 399 square kilometers."
Khalaf added, "The work is based on clearing the dangerous area in the governorate, and in the event that the contaminated areas are completed, it will move to areas not cleared previously."
He pointed out, "The total contaminated areas in the southern regions amount to 1189 square kilometers, of which 1598 square kilometers were cleared," noting that "the area under work reaches more than 359 square kilometers."
He continued, "The polluted areas in the central regions have a pollution volume of 397 square kilometers, of which 272 square kilometers have been purified, and the area under work reaches 72 square kilometers," explaining that "the challenges facing the department are the wideness of the pollution area, and the lack of capabilities and funding."
