The Ministry of Commerce confirmed, today, Thursday, that the failure to pass the emergency support law for food security and development put the ministry at a crossroads in light of the global food crisis, while reassuring citizens that there will be no famine in Iraq, as some warn.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, Muhammad Hanoun, told Al-Iraqiya News, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the ministry has warned since the beginning of this year that the world is going through an economic crisis due to high prices, and strategic steps must be taken to confront it."
He added, "The Ministry of Commerce is committed to the food basket program and is continuing with the operations of receiving wheat, and we have completed marketing 777 thousand tons of local wheat until today, and there will be no famine, as some warn.".

He continued, "There are problems related to the lack of a budget, which stood as an obstacle to strengthening the strategic treasury, as well as the failure to pass the emergency support law, which put us at a crossroads, and the situation requires urgent measures to provide food supplies in an integrated manner and to cross the crisis.".

Cabinet spokesman Hassan Nadhim confirmed, yesterday, Wednesday, that the government's cooperation with Parliament may reach a food security law that overcomes challenges.
