The Regional Director of the World Food Program (FAO) for the Middle East and North Africa Corinne Fleischer revealed the organization's contributions in Iraq, while noting that it is working with the government to help alleviate poverty levels.
Fleischer said during her speech at the Regional Conference for the Near East, which was attended by the correspondent of the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the organization has established 550 km of irrigation canals in Iraq, and the course of the rivers has been cleaned for a distance of 750 km, and we have also established a thousand camps for heating."
She added, "As for Egypt, we supported agriculture with (20) percent of the land, which contributed to increasing production by 35 percent."
She stressed that "the Food and Agriculture Program provides reasons to increase farmers' production and provide food, and we plan for the future, and we must advance our work with governments, including Iraq, to help get out of poverty."
And she continued, "Our experience in Iraq is successful in support of the government's efforts to provide food to all residents, and we support helping rural areas."
