The U.N. Security Council got five new members Tuesday, as Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates formally took up the posts they won in an election in June.
Albania joins the council for the first time, while this is the eleventh time for Brazil, while Gabon and Ghana were in the council three times, while the UAE occupied its membership once.
Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam ended their terms on Friday.
The 15-member council is the highest body of the United Nations. Russia, the United States, China, France and the United Kingdom are permanent members of the council, and each has the right of veto.
Other non-permanent members are elected by the 193-member General Assembly for staggered two-year terms allotted to global regions.
