A spokesman for the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Major General Yahya Rasool, identified on Thursday the objectives of the security plan carried out on the common border with the Syrian side.

"The 650 km security fence with the Syrian side includes fortifications, including a trench, as well as watchtowers, thermal cameras and barbed wire," Rasool told the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

"The danger remains within Syrian territory, especially in areas in the northwest where terrorist organizations are present," he said.

"Securing the border is a priority for the Iraqi military leadership," he said, adding that "the border with neighboring countries is well secured by border guards, but we are interested in controlling the entire Iraqi-Syrian border and preventing terrorist infiltration into Iraq."

"The commander-in-chief of the armed forces is an important observer and we have a great intelligence effort," he said, noting that "the two operations carried out by the Iraqi National Intelligence Service to arrest the deputy of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the official of the administration and finance and responsible for several terrorist operations were a fatal blow, in addition to the arrest of the criminal Ghazwan al-Zubai."

"The Iraqi intelligence service is working hard and we will reach out to all terrorists and hand them over to the judiciary to receive their just punishment," he said.
