Human Rights: Two protesters were killed and 150 wounded in Tahrir square

    The High Commission for Human Rights announced that two demonstrators were killed and 150 people were wounded, in the events that accompanied the May 25 demonstrations in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad.
    The Commission stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), today, Wednesday, that "while we affirm the guarantee of the citizen's right to opinion, expression and peaceful demonstration, we deeply regret the fall of martyrs and injured protesters and security forces as a result of the clashes that occurred in Tahrir Square in Baghdad." Which led to the death of two demonstrators and wounding (20) others, and many of them are still seriously injured so far.
    The Commission added that "yesterday's events also resulted in the injury of (130) security forces and the arrest of a large number of demonstrators, as they were released and the remaining (11) protesters were presented to the judiciary with the burning of (2) caravans belonging to the police force as a result of the use of Live bullets and tear gas from the security forces, and stones and sharp tools by the demonstrators. "

    The commission explained that, "from the start of the demonstrations until this moment, they were calling for the prevention of the use of excessive violence, and law-keeping forces and the security forces supporting them were subjected to more than (500) training workshops on how to deal with and protect demonstrators, while confirming to the demonstrators their full commitment to the standards of peaceful protest and distancing themselves from Any clashes with the security forces, they renew their call on all parties to take utmost restraint and maintain peaceful demonstrations. "

    During the statement, Human Rights demanded the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to assume responsibility and take the most serious measures against those who used live bullets and excessive violence, refer them to the judiciary, and release all those detained in connection with the demonstrations.

    It also renews its demand to the demonstrators to prevent those who want to divert the demonstrations from their peaceful course and to continue their exercise of this right by cooperating with the security forces and preserving public and private property.
