The ancient city of Wasit is one of the oldest major Islamic cities, and it was named Bussat because of its geographical location, which connects Basra and Kufa, but it needs more support and the advancement of services, which could make it a great tourist attraction that attracts tourists from all over the world .
The director of the Antiquities and Heritage Inspectorate, Wasit Hasanin Ali, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The ancient city of Wasit was built on an elevated area of land in the year 83 AH corresponding to 701 AD, and at that time it became the seat of his rule with the aim of securing control over the city, in addition to supervising it, and facilitating Military move to Basra and Kufa. "
He added, "The city was established in an area known for its strategic importance to achieve many purposes, including political and military, as well as economic, with the aim of benefiting from the Tigris River, which gave the city a historical importance throughout the ages," pointing out that "there are several exploration campaigns that included the city," Which revealed the existence of many monuments dating back to the Umayyad and Abbasid periods. "
He stressed that "neglect surrounds the city, as it does not contain services and lacks infrastructure such as water and electricity, and it needs services that would have been possible if it were available, would have had interest in the city and became one of the major tourist cities, to be a great landmark that attracts tourists from all over the world."
