The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Libya announced on Friday the voluntary return of 12 Iraqis after they were detained in Libya due to illegal immigration.
"After follow-ups that took about two months, and through coordination with the relevant authorities in Libya, we succeeded in releasing 12 young Iraqis who had entered Libya with the aim of illegal immigration through it to Europe," the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Libya, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, stated in a statement - received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
The statement added that "the Embassy of Iraq in Tripoli worked to provide food, treatment and high-level follow-up to ensure their safety from the dangers of smuggling and human trafficking networks."
"The embassy had previously published several statements on its website warning young Iraqis of the consequences of falling into the traps of human trafficking networks, which exposes them to the risk of legal accountability, in addition to the risks that threaten their lives and expose them to financial extortion," according to the statement.
He pointed out that "the embassy's efforts had resulted in the return of more than (25) Iraqis during the year 2024, and these follow-ups come in line with the principle of voluntary return."
Earlier, high-level coordination has taken place between the embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs center in Baghdad, as well as the Foreign Relations Committee in the Iraqi Parliament; to facilitate the return of Iraqis recently and secure travel tickets for them in coordination with the relevant authorities.
