British Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed on Thursday, that he discussed with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani Iraq's key role in ensuring regional stability.
Lammy said in a post on the X platform, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "It is important to speak with the Iraqi Prime Minister, as we discussed Iraq's key role in ensuring regional stability."
The media office of the Prime Minister announced in a statement—received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA)—that "Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani received a phone call from British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, during which they discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them, developments in the region, and the consequences of the events in Syria."
During the conversation, the Prime Minister reiterated Iraq’s steadfast position on the necessity of preserving Syria’s security, territorial integrity, and sovereignty, as well as ensuring civil peace under the free will of the Syrian people. He emphasized the importance of respecting Syria’s social, ethnic, and cultural diversity and called on major powers to take responsibility for ending the tragedy in Gaza.
For his part, The British Foreign Secretary expressed his government’s anticipation for the upcoming visit of Mr. Al-Sudani to the United Kingdom next month and highlighted the opportunities to strengthen constructive partnerships in mutual interest. He also reaffirmed the commitments of the International Coalition toward Iraq across various fields and acknowledged Iraq’s pivotal role in maintaining regional security and stability.
