Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein announced on Saturday that a meeting is set to take place in Baghdad, involving officials from both Syria and Turkey to address the ongoing Syrian crisis

In a televised statement from Washington, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Minister Hussein indicated that "Iraq is taking the initiative to mediate between Ankara and Damascus, and Damascus" and that communication between the two sides is ongoing.

He noted that he recently met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Washington to arrange this meeting in Baghdad.

Hussein emphasized that also said that there is "ongoing communication" between Iraq and Syria and that a date for the meeting will be set soon.

He also stated that the decision to mediate the talks was "Iraqi" and that Iraq "does not take its cue from others in its domestic or foreign policies, but consults with its friends and allies on the steps it takes, especially those related to the security and stability of the region."
