National Security Adviser Qassim Al-Araji stressed on Wednesday the importance of the role of tribes’ sheikhs in enhancing societal cohesion in Iraq, while calling for a serious stand with the international community to stop the aggression on Gaza.
Al-Araji said, at a conference held for tribes’ sheikhs, attended by a reporter of the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The tribes are a social system that has a major role in the history of Iraq and is the real support for the political system and governments," noting that "the supreme religious authority and the Iraqi tribes changed the face of Iraq during the British occupation, as they confronted the occupation and helped the judiciary solve many issues."
He added, "The tribal system is the reason for strengthening societal cohesion in Iraq, so we must pay attention to the tribes and not target or weaken and tear them apart," stressing "the need for a special law for tribes, attention to tribal sheikhs, and not allowing intruders on the sheikhdom to tamper with the security of the country."
Al-Araji stressed "the importance of achieving security and stability in our country, Iraq, which sacrificed and endured a lot during the days of the terrorist ISIS, and all Iraqi tribes provided their dearest youth, we must work with love and peace, as the law must be the ruler over everyone, with justice, fairness and the restoration of rights."
"What is happening now in Gaza and the killings of children and women, collective punishment, cutting off water and electricity, and preventing aid, these issues are a clear and explicit violation of international and humanitarian law and human rights," he said.
He pointed out that "the cowardly act of bombing the hospital yesterday, which killed hundreds of children and innocent people, pushes us not to adhere to statements and denunciations, but we must stand seriously with the international community and stop the aggression and hold the perpetrators accountable."
He also pointed out that "what is happening in Gaza is a real and unacceptable disaster, and it is necessary to stand by the Palestinian people, and security and safety will not be achieved without the existence of an independent Palestinian state."
It is to be mentioned that the National Security Advisory/National Committee for Combating Extremism, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, organized on Wednesday, a conference for tribes’ sheikhs from the provinces of Baghdad - Kirkuk - Diyala - Dhi Qar - Karbala, Wasit and Anbar.
