The representative of the United Nations in Iraq, Jeanine Plasschaert, confirmed that Iraq is suffering from a real water crisis, while pointing out the need for collective action to develop solutions.

Plasschaert told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) on Sunday, that "the United Nations is part of the Iraq Climate Conference, which is being hosted by the Basra Governorate, and there is a feeling that there is an urgent need to find solutions to the water crisis in Iraq."

She added, "We must all move in order to find solutions, and that Iraq cannot do this alone," stressing "Iraq's need for support, whether from international organizations, international financial institutions, neighboring countries, and others."

"We are here today to build partnerships, and what the United Nations can offer is to be an important partner that calls for effective dialogue and provides technical assistance on what is under negotiation," she added.

She pointed out, "There are many agencies, funding and programs to help Iraq mitigate the impact of climate change and adapt to it."
