UNAMI: The right to peaceful protest is essential to democracy

The United Nations Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), confirmed today, Saturday, that the right to peaceful protest is fundamental to democracy, while praising the professionalism of the Iraqi forces. 

The UN mission said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "As we remember the October 2019 victims, we reiterate that the right to peaceful protest is fundamental to democracy.".

"We salute the Iraqi security forces for their professional handling of the current protests so far, and we call on everyone to refrain from violence and prevent escalation," UNAMI added.
