Sweden reached the final of the second track of the European play-off qualifying for the World Cup Qatar 2022, with a hard victory over its Czech guest 1-0 after the extension Thursday in Solna, to face Poland, which qualified directly for Tuesday’s match as a result of Russia’s exclusion against the background of its invasion of Ukraine.
By qualifying for the final scheduled on Polish soil on Tuesday, Sweden gave its veteran star Zlatan Ibrahimovic the opportunity to lead it to the finals, after he missed Thursday’s meeting in Solna due to the accumulation of warnings.
Sweden owes its qualification at the expense of the Czech Republic, whose dream of reaching the finals for the first time since 2006, to substitute Robin Quaison, who scored the goal in the 109th minute after a pass from Alexander Isak.
And if Sweden had failed Thursday to take advantage of the ground workers and the public against the Czech Republic, the match they lost against Spain 0-1 in the last round of the qualifiers would have been Ibrahimovic’s last participation in his country’s shirt because the 40-year-old AC Milan striker is very unlikely to continue his international career after that.
